Christopher Weingarten speaks about the internet and the death of music criticism at the 140 Characters conference. We are about the same age, but in weird ways, it’s like he’s from a generation ahead of me. Christopher says a lot of smart things in this; there’s quite a lot to unpack. Watch, listen, think about it. He is a tremendously entertaining man and should maybe do more public speaking engagements.

I wasn’t entirely convinced by this to start off with, but I persisted and eventually liked a lot of what he’s saying. Particularly this bit from about 7 minutes onwards:

“I can always learn about stuff that’s important to me, that’s easy. I wanna learn about stuff that ISN’T important to me, I wanna be exposed to things! Crowdsourcing killed punk rock, hands down. Okay, the plan is a little bit ambitious, but hey - without our ambitions we’re nowhere. This is the idea: we Dutch people have to deal with quite some prejudices: we’re the land of the racist and retarded politicians, of the whores, of the drugs, the cheese, the tulips, the flatness and foreigners are referring to us as ‘that little country near Germany’.
That is: if they’re already that smart and past the thought that ‘Holland’ is actually a province of Germany, or a street in Amsterdam.

So hey: what the fuck? Let’s put an end to this. We’re in the list of top countries (as you can see here) of all those tumbleblogging countries, but man: there are still some countries above us and we’re blogging this much that we háve to earn a top three spot on this leaderboard.

The Olympus E-P1 has launched, and what a nice camera. In case you’ve been living under a photographic rock, this relatively new system (micro 4/3rds) allows things like live previews, eschewing the standard SLR style of mirrors. It uses a large sensor but in a relatively small and lightweight body.

I’ll let the reader find out more about this great new camera and 4/3rds system - boy is she beautiful - but the main advantage for me is that it’s relatively easy to apply many old, rare, or just beautiful lenses, including C and M mounts. C-mount you may know from Super-16 or other 16mm film cameras; M-mount is the classic (and current) Leica mount. Because as we (should) all know, glass is where you should dump your money. Good glass will last a lifetime.

If you pick up this honey for your new lover, I’d suggest a nice fast prime - like the 25mm f/1.4 Sigma Leica D Summilux
